Frequently Asked Questions

Does tallow skincare smell 'beefy?'

Rendered properly, tallow has a light neutral scent. It is not scentless, but I promise you’re not going to be walking around smelling like beef.

In fact, consider a good thing that you can smell that light natural scent. It means the product hasn’t been overly processed, which damages the nutrient content.

Is all tallow the same?

Not even close! Tallow varies in nutrients and consistency due to many factors:

  • Type of feed and lifestyle of the cow contributes to tallow quality
  • How the fat is rendered (too hot, too many times, or too long will render (pun intended) the finished product basically devoid of nutrients)
  • Which fat is used (suet vs trim fat)

Can I use tallow on my face?

Absolutely! In fact, we highly recommend it. Tallow will not clog your pores, like many plant based oils do.

    Is tallow safe for babies?

Yes! Tallow is safe for babies’ sensitive skin and can actually help soothe all sorts of baby skin ailments such as diaper rash, cradle cap, and other irritations. We use it regularly on our children when their skin seems dry (hello, Alberta winter) and on sore, red bums.

      Will tallow help eczema?

Eczema, and most other skin conditions, is usually a manifestation of internal health imbalances (often gut-related). This is why use of topical solutions don’t often actually fix the problem.

That said, tallow has shown to greatly soothe and improve eczema and rashes. Because it is so nutrient dense, it seems to aid in some healing of the skin manifestations. We personally recommend tallow as just one tool in the toolbox on the journey to healing, not as a cure-all.

Why do you use essential oils?

We’ve been essential oil enthusiasts for a long time. Unfortunately due to cheaper/lower quality oils (and improper usage), they’ve kind of gotten a bad rep. Our essential oils are sourced from distributors that offer only high quality, ethically sourced, independently tested oils.

We’ve chosen a select handful of oils to use in the products, each one for its unique profile and healing properties first. The aromatic aspect is secondary.

Check the “What’s in It and Why” section on each of our product pages to see exactly which oils (and other ingredients) we’ve included and why.

We know many people are quite sensitive to smells which is why all our blends are lightly scented to not be offensive, while still providing healing benefits. The smell from essential oils also doesn’t linger. Once applied, the smell will decrease shortly.

Why is the consistency of my tallow balm not exactly the same every time?

          1. Because nature varies. No two cows will have the exact same diet, and even the slightest difference can affect the hardness and texture of tallow
          2. Because these products are handmade in small batches and it is only possible to control so much. While we do our absolute best to keep every batch as consistent as possible, there are some things we can’t control. Please forgive and see this as the beauty of natural, handcrafted products with no weird cancer-causing, hormone disrupting preservatives and emulsifiers

The most common variance is hardness of the tallow balms. This is due to differences in suet and the nature of fat in general. Suet does tend to be harder and no matter how much it is whipped, once it cools down it returns to a harder state. Simply retrieve the balm from your tin and warm it in your hands briefly to soften it before applying as usual.
